Becoming a Sister Wife: Is There an Age Minimum?

Jun 20 | By Chris

People who are unfamiliar with polygamy categorize the lifestyle into a gray area when it comes to ethics. Isn’t it cheating? Aren’t you teaching your children the wrong things?

Another prevalent question when one is looking to become a sister wife or looking for a sister wife is, how young is too young? Alternatively, can one be too old to join or create a plural family?

Child Marriage In the US

In America, there are 9 states that don’t have a minimum for legal marriage. Moreover, the age minimum for the 41 states that do have child marriage legislation allows for children as young as 14 to get married with parental consent and/or the consent of a judge.

Child Marriage Around the World

There are 23 countries that allow child marriage globally, including Niger, Bangladesh, India, and Mali. The bright side is that many organizations and human rights groups are actively fighting to boost legislation around arranged marriages and child marriages.

Child Marriage In Certain Religions

Most religious communities encourage members to marry young. The reasoning behind this is that since sexual relationships are sinful between people who are not married, younger people will marry to avoid sinning, especially in Christian communities.

Fundamentalist Communities

Naturally, non-members may wonder if becoming a sister wife as a child is a common occurrence in Mormon sects. Some sects have a law that the woman in question must be at least 18 to become a sister wife.

In Utah, anybody wanting to enter into a marriage must obtain parental approval. Of course, this is the official statement on paper, but many former members who have escaped manipulative, polygamous communities have reported being forced into marriage as minors.

Many others are groomed as minors and nudged into a marriage when they come of legal age.

Becoming a Sister Wife in the Brown Family

One of the most well-known proponents of polygamy, Kody Brown, has said multiple times that he will only consider a woman becoming a sister wife in his family if said woman is at least 18 years old.

Fitting, since Kody met his first wife, Meri when she was 18 years old. But, age seems to be just a number in many other public polygamist families.

Seeking Sister Wife Age Differences

In fact, in the new season of Seeking Sister Wife, there are significant age differences between the adults in the relationships. For one, couple April and Nick Davis are 12 and 14 years older than their partner of four years, respectively.

The long-time couple entered a relationship with Jennifer when she was just 19 years old. Additionally, they’re now dating a 22-year-old woman who might just become a sister wife to their cozy family.

Steve and Brenda Foley of the previous season of Seeking Sister Wife are also searching for a younger sister wife to grow their unit.

Is It Too Late to Become a Sister Wife?

While many people become sister wives because they come from a plural family or they are part of a community that supports polygamy, there are many more who try out the lifestyle with no prior experience.

Frankly, there are many who decide to try the polygamist lifestyle past the “prime” of their lives. I’ll go out on a limb and say many people try polygamy after walking away from a divorce or a long-term monogamous relationship.

Needless to say, there is no age minimum for becoming a sister wife. Everyone is at different stages in their lives, and as an older woman, you might be able to offer more to your partners and sister wives such as higher emotional intelligence, a wealth of life experience, and maybe even financial support.

Don’t let a number stop you from exploring the side of you that wants to become a sister wife. After all, you get to choose your commitments, relationship arrangements, and boundaries.

Becoming a Sister Wife: Should There Be an Age Limit?

Every country and state has varying legislations when it comes to marriage. While child marriage is a humanitarian crisis in different parts of the world, becoming a sister wife at a young, legal age, seems to be accepted in the appropriate circles.

So long as everyone involved is a consenting adult who can make lucid, consenting decisions, then becoming a sister wife is no different than entering any other type of relationship.
